Shonen Note is a story about Yutaka Aoi, a boy with an incredible affinity for singing soprano. When he moves into a new town, Yutaka overhears the sound of a school choir practicing and is promptly inspired to join. Captivated by his angelic voice and vibrant personality, they eagerly accept him into their group.
And although Shonen Note revolves somewhat around Yutaka’s remarkable voice and the time ahead when he will lose his ability to sing in the soprano style he so loves forever, the choir itself manages to be woven perfectly into the story. As opposed to allowing them to become just a plot device whose sole purpose is to make Yutaka appear more extraordinary, the author Yuhki Kamatani carefully introduces and develops a new member in every volume, giving each of them their own emotions and perspectives.
Anyway, the story is profound and super well written, the art is absolutely gorgeous, and the characters are fresh and feel so alive. I’ve read six out of ten in the series at the moment, and it’s already easily one of my favorite manga.
This is the most effortless recommendation ever. Shonen Note is absolute cinema. Five out of five stars.
